Deepfake PlaygroundS2025

To support my senior thesis on non-consensual AI generated media (pornography), I designed and developed a micro-site that tests users on their ability to detect AI-generated images.

Target Audience

The primary digital users interacting with AI-generated media are Generation Z and Millennials. These groups are highly active on social media, where most AI-driven content circulates, and they represent the largest demographic of generative AI users.

Research revealed varying levels of awareness and engagement. Some participants reported frequent interactions with AI, while others encountered it only occasionally. Although many felt confident identifying AI-generated media by its “uncanny” qualities, one participant admitted to not knowing what deepfakes were—suggesting unintentional exposure. For most, AI content appeared in lighthearted or humorous contexts, underscoring both the casual nature of everyday encounters and the limited recognition of its more harmful applications, such as deepfakes.

Gen Z and Millennials frequently engage with AI-generated media but lack consistent awareness of deepfakes, leaving them vulnerable to unintentional exposure and misinformation.

A key consideration when designing the user flow was that the target audience has short attention spans, so the site needed to start strong with engaging content. Its main feature is an interactive test using well-known political and pop culture figures. To sustain attention, the experience is built around interactive touchpoints, giving users autonomy and control throughout their journey.
