Supplementary microsite supporting my Senior thesis; tests users on their ability to detect AI generated images (deepfakes).
My Senior thesis studies the negative social implications of non-consensual AI generated pornography. This supplementary micro-site supports the main research projects.

Deepfake Playground is a safe space for curious users to explore examples of deepfakes, as well as test their ability to detect them. The micro-site aims to spread awareness about the existance and threat of deepfakes to digital users. It does so specifically by highlighting the realism of AI generated imagery and how this intertwines with the rising prevelancy of deepfake pornography.

Targeting Generation Z (12-28 year olds):

This age demographic, specifically younger adults, are primary digital users. They the largest demographic utilizing AI technogies and consuming digital pornography, making them relevant to both aspects of the thesis. Additionally they are regular users of social media where AI generated media is frequently distributed.

A series of interviews asked users about their everyday use of technology and familiarty with AI; including consumption, context, and detection ability.

Users reported inconsistent understanding of deepfakes. Some subjects reported frequent AI interaction, while others engaged with it only occasionally. Although they felt confident identifying AI content by its ‘uncanny’ qualities, one subject admitted to not knowing what deepfakes were, suggesting they may unknowingly engage with them. Overall, AI media was mostly encountered in lighthearted or humorous contexts, reflecting both the casual nature of everyday exposure and the limited awareness of more malicious uses, such as deepfakes.
A key consideration when designing the user flow was that the target audience has short attention spans, so the site needed to start strong with engaging content. Its main feature is an interactive test using well-known political and pop culture figures. To sustain attention, the experience is built around interactive touchpoints, giving users autonomy and control throughout their journey.

Low fidelity wireframes of the site.

The final site raises users’ awareness of realistic synthetic AI media while satisfying their curiosity to explore it. Visitors leave with a clearer understanding of what deepfakes are, the technologies behind them, and the potential threats they pose.
