Through step-by-step recipes, simple visuals, and interactive activities, Dice brings Montessori-inspired philosophy into a cooking app for children ages 6–10.

I was originally tasked to illustrated each step of a recipe of my choice (lemon shaker pie) and to present in a deliverable of choice. Taking advantage of the visually cognitive breakdown and universal understanding of images across age groups, I developed Dice, a mobile application that introduces cooking to ages 6-10.

Studies show that over half of school-aged children (ages 6-14) exceed 2 hours of daily screen time since the COVID-19 pandemic (Z hou et al., 2023). Technology use is inevitably becoming more involved at younger ages, but we can be mindful of what platforms this time is invested towards.

Dice streamlines and breaks down the cognitive load:

By breaking complex skills into simple steps, using engaging characters, and encouraging caregiver co-play, Dice makes cooking fun and approachable while building kids’ confidence and practical skills.

Fun characters to boost engagement and guidance:

Children form parasocial bonds with characters, which supports engagement and comprehension. Dice features 6 different characters that take advantage of color and shape associations kids form at a young age to guide children through the recipes.

Happy

Happy encourages kids when faced with challenging new learning techniques. Acts to break-up difficult tasks and keep excitment up.

Lucky

Similar to Happy, but Lucky has a bit more ambition associated with him. Drives kids to strive for success and completion of tasks.

Yummy

Yummy is useful when introducing kids to new dietary horizons. Yummy helps fight against picky eating habit and instead foster curiosity.

Quirky

Kids may feel uneasy or uncomfortable during the learning process; Quirky understands that. Quirky makes sure kids don’t feel alone in this.

Wary

Wary is the preliminary to Snappy. He helps guides kids through topics that are more serious, advanced, and focuses on objectives.

Snappy

Snappy is for the most challenging lessons. Certain tasks inevitablly will be too dangerous for kids, Snappy ensures adult supervision.
